And in those moments, maintaining your boundaries can feel like guilt, shame and selfishness-but there is nothing shameful or selfish about self-care. You don’t owe it to any one to abandon the things you need to cope and survive. You come first. Their reactions might feel uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as existing under terms that jeopardize your well-being. You belong to yourself, and if you don’t protect your space and energy, no one else will.” XO
